Boys and Girls Both Bring Home State Soccer Titles

Mustang fans exploded with excitement and pride last Saturday as both the boys' and girls' soccer teams won state championships at Radford University.

The boys’ team won the meet against Madison County on April 24 by a narrow margin. Orie Bumgarner knocked 7 seconds off his mile time and Steven Twentyman also set a personal record with a throw of 90 feet in the discus.

The varsity volleyball team lost in the district quarterfinals at Strasburg last Tuesday to end their season. Playing the 4th seeded Rams, with whom the 5th seeded Mustangs had split during the season, the girls came out slow to say the least, trailing 1-8 behind sloppy serve-receive.

Gliding into first place, junior Annie Maynard shattered her previous record by over thirty seconds, beating the course record with a time of 19:36 for the 3.1 mile course.

The game ended up being exactly as Coach Horn had predicted, very physical, and very intense.

Aim for Rival Madison County Thursday

The Lady Mustangs had an easy win over Clarke County, 54-36, last night at home. The Mustangs demolished the Eagles’ defense, especially in the first quarter in which Mason outscored County 19-2. Senior Beth Pyne contributed 14 of those points.

Mason Striders Finish Strong at Stonewall Jackson Invitational

Mason striders Annie Maynard and Andrew Montgomery emerged victorious at the 4th annual Stonewall Jackson Cross Country Invitational Meet on Saturday, each winning their respective races. The girls’ team came away with a first place finish, with Maynard, Liz Twentyman, Louisa Fairfax, and Alison Penland all medaling. The boys’ team captured a fourth place finish.

Building the Road, Mustangs Defeat Goochland 39-7

In the first game at the new Goochland Stadium, the Mustang football team defeated the Bulldogs of Goochland 39-7. After struggling as a team in the last two games against state runner-up Bath County and Stonewall Jackson, a true sense of unity filled the air as Mason scored 21 points in the first half, all three touchdowns belonged to junior Dominic Clark.
