Girls Drop Two to Tigers and Mountaineers

By: Jessica Szymanski and Adrienne Thompson (April 11, 2002)

This past Thursday and Friday, the girls’ softball team lost to district rivals, the Brentsville High School Tigers and the Madison County Mountaineers. Despite recent cold weather Thursday, the girls started off going 5 innings with only 4, but could not keep up with the defending champion Tigers’ offense and ended the game with 11 errors, losing 14-8. The team was led by freshman Casey Smirniotopolous, sophomore Karyn Graham, and junior Laura Straub. Last year, the Mustangs did not hit as well and fell to the Tigers by a larger margin. This year, the Mustangs’ hitting is stronger and the team is able to stay in games.

On Friday, against the Mountaineers, the Mustangs’ offense was unable to keep up with the Mountaineers defense and fell, 7-0. Junior Kristen Janski slid into home plate at the top of the third inning, but was called out by the umpires. Unlike last year, the Mustangs aren’t afraid to get down and dirty because junior Christine Hillegass slid into third base after hitting what could have been a triple, but unfortunately was tagged out by the third baseman.

The Mustangs’ record now stands at 0-3 and they are hoping to improve to 1-3 against the defending Virginia Region A State Champions Rappahannock High School, Tuesday, April 9, at 5 p.m.
