Mustangs Fall to Rams in Districts;
Team Says Farewell to 7 Seniors

By Kendra Webb (February 21, 2002)

The varsity volleyball team lost in the district quarterfinals at Strasburg last Tuesday to end their season. Playing the 4th seeded Rams, with whom the 5th seeded Mustangs had split during the season, the girls came out slow to say the least, trailing 1-8 behind sloppy serve-receive. This did not leave the girls much time to recover and play, as they easily fell in the first game, 4-15, without even making one full line-up rotation.

Little more was to be said for game two of the night, especially in the way of offense. Putting up numbers for Mason was junior Laura Straub with one kill, and senior Kendra Webb with two aces off of her jump-serve and six kills on the night. Defensively, the girls also lacked with the exception of one block apiece by seniors Adrienne Thompson and Webb. The Mustangs lost to the Strasburg Rams 9-15 in game two to drop the match.

Although losing to a once-beatable team, head coach Barbara Mahony had nothing but good words to say about what she saw. "I am sad that this was my last game with my seniors. Their leadership and skill will be missed by everyone in the years to come for this program. They’ve really made it special for me working here. They did their best they could tonight and that’s all I could ever ask for." Graduating from the team this year are seven seniors: Christina Christianson, Melina Jordan, Beth Parks, Christine Piscopo, Leen Quintyn, Adrienne Thompson, and Kendra Webb.
