Mustangs Fall to Mountaineers, 2-1

By Kendra Webb (January 28, 2002)

In a frustrating match, the Mustangs fell to the Madison County Mountaineers in three games Friday night at home.

In game one the girls rallied for four points behind the strong serving of Adrienne Thompson who also recorded a kill. The rally, however, was not enough to turn the momentum as the Mountaineers took control and won 15-6.

The ‘Stangs charged out early in the second game with setter Laura Straub and defensive specialist Aysha Twose leading the way with a kill apiece. The game was played evenly up to the fifth point. Mason’s Kendra Weeb contributed three kills and two blocks and Thompson two kills. From there, junior Christine Hillegass stepped uo to the serving line to score three points. After the Mountaineers immediately gave the serve back, Thompson took control of the game and the Mustangs scored six points to break away 13-5. After Madison was called for a net violation, Straub finished the game with her serve and the Mustangs won 15-5.

Mason went ahead 7-0 in the third game behind the serving of Webb and Hillegass, but Madison was able to answer the call and pulled back to 6-7. Despite kills by Thompson and Straub and Twose, the Mountaineers serving proved too strong and their four aces finished out the game and Mason lost.

After flirting with a 44 district record, the Mustangs actually fell to 3-5. The coming week will be busy for Mason with matches on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Monday’s match is against Bull Run District leader Clarke County away.
