Icing the Cake: Mason Grapplers Continue Winning Streak;
Mustang Seniors Record Victories

By Mike Denny (January 20, 2002)

The 45-25 win over Manassas Park on Wednesday, was the cherry on the sundae, the icing on the cake, in a line of Mason victories. Soundly defeating the Cougars of Manassas Park, Mason showed style and strength in the victory. The senior class of Matt Bond, Joab Cohe, John-Henry Pitas, Mike Denny, and Josh Singer all defeated their opponents with pins recorded by Cohe and Denny. With this win, Cohe moved within six wins of the 100-career wins mark. This milestone would be the first reached by a Mason wrestler in memory.

Sophomores Colin Emer and Andrew Hipolet also recorded victories, with Andrew Montgomery and junior Dominic Clark receiving forfeits. Sophomores Mac Cohe and Pete Taylor looked strong despite losing efforts.

The Mason wrestling program is making a name for itself. Strong showings at past tournaments and a win at the Amelia County Invitational (the first 1st Place Wrestling Trophy in the Trophy Case) continue the formation of a credible and strong program. Despite a rough week of wrestling including a district quad last Wednesday against state champs Brentsville, returning third in the state Strasburg, and new and upcoming Rappahannock, Mason stayed strong to tally up the first place team win at Amelia.

Mason wrestlers have remained on top throughout much of this season, registering major victories in almost all of their matches.
As these trophies, all recently won by Mason wrestlers in competition, attest the Mustang grapplers are having one of their best seasons in  memory.
Going into an open weekend and exam week, the district dual against Madison County scheduled for next Wednesday was moved back to Friday to accommodate the exam schedule. With only four weeks to the district competition, maintaining a focused attitude is key to ensure continued victory.
