Mustangs Fall 1 Run Short to Eagles

By Jessica Szymanski (April 4, 2002)

The Mustang Softball team played its first district home game Tuesday April 2 but lost to the Clarke County Eagles 5-4. Always neck and neck with the Eagles and hitting better than before, the Mustangs gave the Eagles a run for their money.

With the score tied at 4, the Lady Horse-Riders went into an extra inning prepared to score. Although center fielder Laura Straub made it to second base, her teammates failed to bring her home.

Bringing up the team’s enthusiasm early in the game, pitcher Kristen Janski scored the first two runs. Shortly after that, shortstop Jessica Szymanski and first baseman Marlise Tumolo added the last two. Strong hitting by juniors Sarah Young and Straub, and freshman Casey Smirniotopoulos helped the players round the bases while bringing in the final two runs.

Consisting of two seniors, ten juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen, the Mustangs are looking forward to a successful season. The much-anticipated batting cage arrived recently, which should help the Mustangs prepare for their opponents. The next game will be held Thursday April 4 at Brentsville, followed by Friday April 5 at Madison County.
