Mustangs Lose District Opener, 83-55
By Beth Pyne (Dec. 20, 2001)

In their first Bull Run district contest, the Mustangs were defeated 83-55 by Clarke County.

After a first quarter that assistant coach Dan Wilkie called "the best yet of the season," Mason was worn down by the Eagles’ stifling, full-court man-to-man press.

Trailing by 11 at half time, the Mustangs watched this deficit grow in the third and fourth quarters as they were plagued by turnovers. Clarke’s offensive barrage was powered by Damon Hubbard, who led all scorers with 29 points.

For the Mustangs, senior Darrelly Marsh turned in a strong performance, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Co-captain Ben Griffin added 11 points and five each of rebounds and assists. Also putting in a strong effort was junior Joel Wray who scored nine points, including two three-pointers.

Wilkie encouraged fans to "pack the Pit" this Friday as Mason takes on Madison County in its second dstrict game. The junior varsity will play at 6 and the varsity at 7:30.
