Eagles Fly Past Mustangs, 74-55

By Beth Pyne (Jan. 24, 2002)

Clarke County continued its perfect season in the district, defeating the Mason Tuesday night 74-55.

The Mustangs came of the starting blocks strong, then weathered a run by the Eagles to stay within seven after one quarter. But by half time the Eagles had proven why they are atop the Bull Run District, outscoring Mason 23-6 in the second quarter.

Outstanding hustle by the Mustangs in the second half was not enough to overcome the sizeable deficit and the explosive play of Clarke County’s star forward Damien Hubbard who racked up 30 points for the game.

Sophomores Evan Hamme, Sean Snider and Reggie Whittaker showed great potential for the coming years, tallying 13 points, eight points and six assists respectively. As usual, senior Ben Griffin displayed his multifaceted ability, scoring 12 points and grabbing five rebounds as well as chipping in seven assists.

This Friday Mason will take on the Mountaineers of Madison County away.
