"This was a potentially huge loss for us, one which will test how much we want it," said Mason head coach Chris Madison following his Mustangs’ 33-29 loss to district rival Rappahannock this past Tuesday.

Following last Thursday’s important victory over powerhouse Madison county, the Mustangs’ loss came as a surprise and was due to Mason’s anemic 18 percent shooting. "Our defense was great, but it seemed like we couldn’t hit anything, including uncontested lay-ups," said Madison.

The Panthers successfully used a box-and-one defense on Mason’s senior scoring guard, Beth Pyne, holding her to only two points. Senior center Adrienne Thompson’s 12 points and 10 rebounds and junior forward Christina Sedney’s 10 rebounds were the high points for the Mustangs in this character-testing loss.

"Our loss puts Madison County in the driver’s seat to win the regular season district title since their remaining schedule looks like wins for them. That means that we’re either going to have to win the district tournament or at least finish second to Madison in the final since changes in the district’s rules will only send the top two teams, not three, to regionals," said Madison.

The Mustangs will try to bounce back tonight at home against Manassas Park. JV tips off at 6, varsity at 7:30.
