Montgomery, Maynard Lead Mustangs to Regional Berths

By Liz Twentyman (Oct. 26, 2001)

Struggling through soaring temperatures, Masonites Andrew Montgomery and Annie Maynard carried away the individual district titles at Wednesday’s cross country district meet. Mason eighth-grader Jessie Porzel placed first in the girls’ junior varsity race. Montgomery led the boys’ team to a second place finish (a tie with Brentsville was broken by sixth runner Josh Singer), while the girls placed third in the seven team field. As the top four teams advance to the regional championships, to take place next Wednesday at Madison County High School, both Mason teams are racing in regionals for the first time in at least four years.

Clearly, the heat took its toll on the Mason harriers. Maynard, in addition to several other runners, was disoriented after finishing the race. Other Mason runners added more than a minute to their times.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams are optimistic about their possibility of making it to states. Boys’ co-captain Josh Singer said, "We just have to keep running like we know we can." Girls’ co-captain Christina Christianson agreed, saying, "Our district has traditionally been the strongest in the region, and even in the state. If we run like we’re capable of doing, we should place well at regionals."
