Girls Win Opening Soccer Regional Math;
Qualify for States with 3-1 Win over Falcons
(May 30, 2002)

Following a monumental week, the Mason girls’ varsity soccer team is now scheduled to advance to the state semi-final match in Radford next Friday, June 7th. Starting last Thursday at tournament-host Rappahannock, the girls played Madison County in the district semi-finals. Dominating every aspect of the game, the team won 3-1 with two goals by freshman Claire Grubbs and one by senior Kendra Webb.

Advancing to the Bull Run District Final Friday night against favorite and regular season champ Brentsville District, the team miraculously won, pulling possibly the greatest upset in Mason girls’ soccer history. As the underdog, Mason came out pumped and ready to play to defy all expectations and put their rivals to the test. Down 0-1, Mustang forward Alison Penland made two perfectly placed shots on goal in the upper reaches of the net away from goalie Colleen Thomas to go up 2-1. With only minutes to go, the team focused on defense, and celebrated heartily with the blow of the whistle. Until then, Brentsville had not been beaten in the district for three seasons.

Immediately following the championship game, the All-District team selections were announced, voted on Wednesday night by the coaches in the district. Representing Mason were five players: Grubbs and Penland for First-Team, and senior Caitie Flaherty, sophomore Becky Roa, and Webb for Second-Team.

In the first round of regional play on Tuesday night, Mason beat Central Woodstock, first in their district, in a score of 3-2. Scoring early for the Mustangs was sophomore midfielder Amanda Harrington with a long lofting shot. Shortly after the Falcons answered back, freshman midfielder Christina "Kiki" Kirkbride put a ball in the back of the net to go up 2-1. Responding once again, the Falcons evened the score midway through the second half. With the clock running down and over-time ominously looming, midfielder Grubbs headed the ball in for the final goal of the match to win 3-2.

On Thursday, the regional final game will be played against the winner of the Brentsville/Wilson Memorial game. The site and time of the match are still pending. Mason has already qualified for states since Region B will send both its first and second place teams.
