Mustangs Throttle Cougars, 71-19

By Justin Barrow (October 19, 2001)

The girls basketball team picked up an easy win last night at home against the Cougars of Manassas Park by the score of 71 – 19. This win took some of the sting out of their hard loss against Rappahannock on Tuesday.

The Mustangs started off with the lead a minute into the game and never let it go. Every quarter the Mustangs beat their competitors with tenacious defense and powerful offense. Every time the Cougars tried to bring the ball down it would be stolen because of their inability to dribble with two hands.

The Mustangs now need to win all the rest of their regular season games to possibly win the district. Madison County is the only thing that stands in their way. The Mountaineers are predicted to win the rest of their games, which would put them in first place. Mason would then have to get into the district finals to have a go at regionals.

The entire team contributed in this crushing defeat. Beth Pyne had 18 points, and nine of those were on 3 pointers. Christina Sedney contributed 11 points while Jessica Szymanski and Adrienne Thompson both had 10. The team’s next game is October 23 against Loudoun County.
