Girls’ Soccer
Futballers Win 2, Move to 6-2 Record
By Kendra Webb (May 7, 2002)

In the past week, the girls’ soccer team went 2-0 against Madison and Rappahannock County High Schools. Facing the Mountaineers at home Tuesday, the girls came out strong and put forth the necessary effort to win 3-1. Goals were scored by halfback Christina Kirkbride, and forwards Alison Penland and Kendra Webb.

Friday afternoon at Rappahannock, the team played a tight match against the tied-for-second-place Panthers. At the end of the first half, both sides were at a 0-0 stalemate until Mason’s play picked up and more shots were taken. The team ended up with a 2-0 shutout behind the goal-tending expertise of senior Leen Quintyn and junior Megan Wilhelm and goals by sophomores Amanda Harrington and Penland.

With two more additional wins under their belt, the girls now have a 6-2 record, good enough for a solid second place behind district-favorite Brentsville. About the week’s play, third-year head coach Clifford Carroll said, "We’ve been making critical improvements in practice in the previous weeks and I feel that the team has been using their skills more effectively in matches as a result."

The next game for the girls will be at home Tuesday against the Manassas Park Cougars at 5. At half-time, the nine seniors players will be commemorated at the designated Senior Night: Emily Dittmar, Caitie Flaherty, Melina Jordan, Melissa Rose-McCully, Claire Montgomery, Dana Wood, and captains Meagan Ireland, Leen Quintyn, and Kendra Webb.
