By Beth Pyne (February 19, 2002)

Mason’s boys’ basketball team was defeated by Brentsville last Tuesday, 50-33, in its final regular season game. The Tigers’ win sealed their place as Bull Run District regular season champions.

After shooting a dismal 015 in the first half of play—their 8 points coming on free throws—the Mustangs re-grouped for a late game rally and brought themselves to within 10. They were unable to complete the comeback, however, as Brentsville was solid from the charity stripe in the final minutes.

The loss put the ‘Stangs, with a 5-7 district record, into a three-way tie for fourth place with Madison County and Strasburg. In the drawing that took place Thursday to determine the seeding for the district tournament, Madison emerged with the fourth seed, followed by Strasburg and Mason in the fifth and sixth spots.

In their first post-season match up, The Mustangs will play Tuesday night, February 19, against the Rams a team they split with in the regular season.

In order for the Mason cagers to repeat last year’s regional appearance, the must advance to the championship game of the single elimination tournament.
