Mustangs Beat Madison County in a Meet
That Produced Several Strong Individual Results .
(May 10, 2002)

The boys’ team won the meet against Madison County on April 24 by a narrow margin. Orie Bumgarner knocked 7 seconds off his mile time and Steven Twentyman also set a personal record with a throw of 90 feet in the discus. Twentyman came in 3rd in the meet. Joey Cohe won both the mile and two-mile by wide margins. Also winning by a long distance was Niles Lashway in the 100m and 300m hurdles. Mark Murchie continued his path of success by coming in 2nd in the high, triple, and long jump and 1st in the 200m and 400m dashes. The boys' 4 x 400m team’s non-stop triumphs continued with a win in the event by at least 150m.

The girls’ team also had several individual victories. Folake Ojumu set a personal record for this season with a time of 13.2 seconds in the 100m dash and came in first in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Leen Quintyn came in 2nd and 3rd in the discus and shot put. Devin Roden-Reynolds won in the high jump and also finished with a good time in the mile. Christina Christianson made her first appearance in the 300m hurdles, an event that suits her like none other.

Mustangs Lose to Clarke County

In the meet against Clarke Country on May 1, tensions were high especially after recent incidents with the Eagles. However the weather was warm and everything turned out pleasantly though both the boys’ and girls’ team lost the meet.

Folake Ojumu won both the 100m and 200m dashes. Devin Roden-Reynolds, with a height of 4’8", came in 2nd in the high jump after a fierce battle. Melissa Womble and Luisa Fairfax battled each other in the 1600m for the first time this season. Fairfax came in first and Womble came in third. Leen Quintyn did equally well in the discus and shot put. The girls 4 x 400m team earned a 1st place finish in an aggressive race. The team was especially lea by anchor Kendra Webb who also won the 400m. Annie Maynard, in her 1st race this season, won the two-mile with an strong time, one that was only four seconds off the state qualifying time.

The boys did equally well with Niles Lashway winning the 300m hurdles and he came in second in the 200m dash. Chad O’Hara came in first in the mile beating out senior sensation Joey Cohe. Cohe earned a 3rd place finish. Nick Huizenga set a personal record in the long jump with a jump of 15’6".

The Mustangs eagerly go on to Brentsville on May 8th.
