Girls’ Soccer
Futballers off to 2-1 Season Start

By Kendra Webb (April 9, 2002)

The varsity girls’ soccer team has started off with a positive 2-1 beginning to their season in the Bull Run District. In their season opener last Tuesday, the girls faced the Clarke County squad at home and schooled them 5-0. The Eagles were dominated with goals scored by sophomores Alison Penland and Becky Roa, freshman Rachel Sweeney and two by Claire Grubbs.

In their first face-off at district archrival Brentsville District on Thursday, the girls lost in a very close match. Going into halftime down 0-3 the Mason girls fought back to outscore their regional champion opponents in the second half 1-0. All-Met selection Tiger goalie Colleen Thomas had a most impressive game, saving shots that would have otherwise put the Mustangs ahead with a comfortable lead. The 1-3 final score was in no way reflective of Mason’s play.

Traveling once again on Friday, the team went up against Madison County to win handily 4-0 with two goals by Roa, a penalty kick made by Penland, and a point by freshman Christina "Kiki" Kirkbride.

The girls’ next district match-up will be away at Manassas Park on Friday. Kick-off is scheduled to be at 5:00 pm.
