Girls Soccer Defies Expectations

By R. Andrew Miller

The obstacles have been both difficult and plentiful so far this year, but the girls soccer team has managed to overcome thus far. The Lady Mustang kickers have suffered the loss of key players Kelly Higgins and Krista Locklar to graduation, seniors Amanda Henneberg, Karly Gould, and Kate Zimmermann to alternative afternoon activities and junior Meghan Ireland to an ankle injury in last Friday night’s game against AAA JEB Stuart. Despite these adversities, the girls have started off their season with a 2-1-1 record, including a 3-0 win in their first district game against Manassas Park on Monday, March 27.

Players and fans alike did not have very high expectations for this years young and inexperienced team. With such an abundance of key player losses – not to mention the injury factor – a winning record was not expected.

Second year Coach Clifford Carroll has a small but potent contingent of senior captains to count on. Midfielder Becky Davis, midfielder Lies Quintyn and defender Elizabeth Falkey are the lone senior representatives on a team that usually carries many more.

"It’s tough to be thrust into a position of leadership, but Becky and myself are looking forward to leading this great group of players to victory," said Falkey.

Carroll will once again rely on third-year starter junior Kendra Webb for some offense up front. Webb is already on pace to break her personal scoring record of last season.

Webb will be assisted with service from Quintyn, sturdy defense by sophomore Christina Sedney and Ireland (when she returns), and solid goalkeeping from junior Leen Quintyn. The team also has an extremely strong freshman class, highlighted by standout playmaker Alison Penland, who has already established herself as a team leader and one of the most dominant players in the district.

"Even though we don’t have the most talented or experienced team, we’re gonna play with more heart than anyone. This team is relentless in its pursuit of success," said Webb.
