Tennis '01

By Betsy Breen

The Bull Run District and Region B Champion boys and girls Varsity tennis teams from last season have returned a few people short, but with the same intensity and determination.

"Even though we lost several key veterans, the resilience and tenacity of the returning players will be the foundation for a highly successful season and the rebirth of a dynasty," said girls’ coach Chris Madison.

Because of the lengthy basketball season, this year’s tennis season has gotten off to a somewhat late start. Although tryouts occurred on time, the teams have only had "official practices" for a little over a week. Despite their lack of time together, both the boys and girls tennis teams pounded Central High School in their first game, on March 22. The girls’ score was an amazing 9-0, while the boys’ was 6-3.

"Our coach said Central had had more practice than we did. He told us just to do our best. It was really exciting to beat them like we did," said senior tennis team member Camilla Jones.

Led by senior phenomenon Liz Gannon, veteran Amanda Henneberg (who red-shirted last season for soccer), and junior Alez Baker, the girls are hopeful after last year’s trip to the state finals.

"We graduated six seniors last year, so this team will have to work hard. But we have the potential for greatness," said Gannon.

"I’m just excited to be on the team, and everything has gone really well so far," said sophomore Mercedes Bezaury.

With many seniors on the team, boys tennis is looking for a memorable season as well. They lost to St. Steven’s 6-3, but Coach Dave Garrison tried to give as many people as possible a chance to play. "Coach Garrison didn’t use the strongest lineup, instead he tried to get a lot of people to play," said junior team member Gordon Daisley.

"I think we have a solid team, with a lot of really strong players," said boys Assistant Coach Si Nerone.

Even though tennis has just begun, the girls and boys teams are looking quite capable. Show your support by coming out Wednesday, April 4, for tennis’s first home game. With so many powerful players, it should be an unforgettable season.

"I am certainly looking forward to a highly successful season. We will build on the tradition we established last season and hopefully bring home a state title," said senior Matt McFarland.
