By Richard Arndt Unlike any other school in the Bull Run district, George Mason has brought in a new American ethnic sport. Lacrosse; the game of Native American Warriors has spread to the Mustang Athletic fields with boys and girls teams started as a lacrosse club last year by middle school psychical education Barbara Mahony. The Mason laxers began their new season this past month with games against high school in the surrounding area. Coaching the girls is Barbara Mahony, who has dedicated much time to promote lacrosse at this school. While Mustang Lacrosse is not an ‘official’ varsity sport at the moment, playing only ‘club’ matches. Matt Lawlor coaches the boy’s team with assistant coaches Mark Coffren and Eric Williams. In their second season the lacrosse team hopes to improve on last years record of 4-2-2. The girl’s team faired worse in their season. One challenge with Mason’s beginning lacrosse club is that the teams have to play more experienced teams from AAA and AAAA schools. "It’s an awesome sport. It is great having it as a club, but it would be better if it were an actual varsity sport," said sophomore Sara Kaplow. Although many of their practices and games have been cancelled due to the rain, the lacrosse teams are still positive about the future sport at Mason. "We’re not that good this year but it’s fun to play and we will hopefully get better," said freshman Jamie Dodson.
