| | Elon University: Youthful Vitality
and Southern Hospitality |

Elon University is surrounded by Evergreen trees and southern hospitality. The campus is spread out. There is a brick walkway that connects each part, but it could be a journey to walk from your residence hall to the Harden Dining Hall. Having a car would be ideal because parking is readily available. A short brick wall creates a fortress around the original campus, a square plot of land with a large central courtyard. I observed students sitting in the grass studying and a group of girls sitting in the grass, decorating t-shirts.
Just beyond the wall are Elon, North Carolina and a railroad track. Mismatched houses ranging from tiny to three stories line the boundary of the campus. I stayed in a garden apartment complex which resides in the neighborhood among these houses. The complex was full of youthful vitality and littered with debris from a wild Saturday night.

Elon is a typical college town, complete with coffee shops, delis, bars, bookstores, and tiny mismatched houses. The enrollment is a bit under 5,000 students. I encountered happy, friendly students from the east coast. The number one thing they said was, “Your teachers know your name here; you are not just a number.” The kindness and acceptance shown by the students I met had a positive affect on my overall feeling about the institution. Other factors that influenced my attitude included the warmth of the college town and the magnificence of the campus.
