Mustangs Fall to Spartans 26-0;
Take on Stonewall Tonight

By Becky Roa (September 12, 2003)

"They were big, physical and had an aggressive bench," said George Mason senior captain Matt Williams in trying to explain the Broad Run Spartans’ dominance as the Mustangs fell 26-0 at home Saturday.

Head football coach Tom Horn recognized the defensive work of Matt Williams for making 21 tackles for the game and both junior Steve Williams and freshman Ryan Larcamp for their numerous tackles for loss.

The Spartans’ first touchdown came in the end of the first quarter when Broad Run was able to rush the ball within the 10-yardline. Attempting a two-point conversion, the Spartans lost control of the ball, causing a fumble and quickly recovered, without scoring. In the second quarter the Spartans again drove the ball to near the end line and scored, ending the half at 16-0.

Although the Mustangs’ defense was more impressive than the offense, the Mustangs did rush for a total of 41 yards on 21 carries. Horn noted, "We were showing some light when our only completed pass from [freshman] Travis Greene to Steve Williams for 52 yards." That would be the extent of the offense for Mason.

The second half brought enthusiasm from the Mustang defense but it still was unable to stop the Spartan offensive attacks. Both offensively and defensively the Mustangs didn’t have enough personnel to compete with the Spartans nearing the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters. With the help of many reserves, the Spartans scored two more touchdowns to end the game at 26-0.

The loss evened the Mustangs’ record at 1-1. Mason beat Falls Church High School 6-0 in its opening game a week ago, claiming the Outback Bowl trophy. The AAA Jaguars were done in by a 51-yard touchdown scamper by Travis Greene. In addition to the trophy, the Mustangs won themselves a dinner at the sponsoring Outback Steakhouse.

The Mustangs "if healthy will be prepared," said Horn, to play "A" Stonewall Jackson this Friday away at 7:30 p.m.
