In its first home meet,
Mason’s girls’ cross country team narrowly won 29-28 over McLean High School
Wednesday afternoon. The boys’ team, while losing 25-31, nevertheless,
took a away a positive feeling, according to a member of the team.
The girls’ team ended the day victorous
as senior Lois Fairfax finished first, at 21.31, while sophomore Kristen
Schwind finished second with a time of 21.46. Jesse Porzel, Kaity Hauter,
and Emily Walden finished 7th,8th, 9th,
respectively, to lead Mason to an extremely close 29 to 28 victory.

The boys competed first,
and by the end of the first 800 meters, it was clear that lead Mason runner
Andrew Montgomery was set to dominate. Even though the line of runners
stretched for hundreds of meters, Montgomery, running with a nagging hip
injury, was never really under threat from the top McLean runner. "Monty"
was even able to lap some of his Mason teammates on his way to finishing
with a course record 17.00 minutes..
Fellow senior Orie Bumgarner, who
continues to improve at every meet, cemented his status as the second fastest
Mason runner by finishing third. That would not be enough to stop McLean
though, as the majority of its runners dominated the middle rankings, which
was enough to edge out Mason 31 to 25.
The meet was well attended and supported
by fans of both teams, which, despite the rivalry, created a pleasant atmosphere.
The day could not have been more perfect for a cross country meet; dry,
with a slight breeze.
The team’s next meet is at Rappahannock.
