Three Advance to State Meet;
Lashway Takes First

The track team competed at the Region B Championship last Saturday, the May 29, at Monticello High School in Charlottesville. Three Mustangs will be heading to Radford University on Saturday for the State Meet.

Leading the way was seniour Niles Lashway, who took first in the 300 hurdles with his second best time of the season. He will be joined by 3200 meter junior runner John Sullivan who took fifth. Senior Luisa Fairfax will be the only representative of the girls’ team traveling, having already qualified through times in previous meets. She finished sixth in the 3200 meter run and seventh in the 1600 meter at regionals.

Senior Orie Bumgarner ended his high school track career with an eighth-place finish in the 800, one spot above junior Jon Byers. Juniors Chad O’Hara and Ted Rowdybush will be looking forward to another shot at regionals next year after finishing ninth and 18th respectively. The district champion 4x400 meter rely team, which provided such excitement at the district meet ran a poor race and could only finish 6th, thereby missing out on the state meet.

On the girls’ side, senior Melissa Womble closed her four-year track stint by finishing 12th in the 1600 and 14th in the 800. Freshman duo Agnes Ek and Emma Goetz gained valuable experience. Ek finished 15th in the 100 and 13th in the 400 while Goetz came in at 13th in the 3200.
