Mustangs
Stampede through Buffalo Gap 7-0;
Qualify for State Championship By: Becky
Roa (June 4, 2004)
It was a fast-paced
first half for the Mustangs as they scored three goals within 25 minutes
of the starting whistle and five more in the second half to shut out Buffalo
Gap High School Thursday night 7-0 in the regional semi-finals. The win
qualifies the Mustangs for the State tournament Friday, June 11, at Radford
University.
Speedy freshman Kaitlin Freeman dribbled down the sideline past two Bison defenders and crossd a ground ball to oncoming senior Becky Roa who scored within the first 10 minutes of the match. Two minutes later, Roa scored again after receiving a throw in from freshman Roxy Sweeney and capitalizing a one-on-one opportunity with the Bison goalie. The third goal was knocked in from inside the 10-yardline by junior Christina Kirkbride, that goal was assisted by freshman Natalie InterDiMaggio. In the second half, senior Alison Penland dribbled by one Bison and drilled a shot form outside the 18-yardline and scored. Keeping up the tempo from the first half, Freeman slipped a shot passed the Bison goalie, assisted by Roa. Up 5-0, the Mustangs were able to play anxious reserves and saw, “great things from each one of them,” said Coach Clifford Carroll. Scoring her first hat-trick since joining the varsity squad was freshman Katie Turner who scored the last three goals of the match. One goal came off of a rebounded shot from another Mustang, amother after tripping up several Bison defenders and striking the ball into the right corner, and the third goal came off of a pass that sailed through the air and Turner one-touched it into the back of the net.
