Varsity Tennis
Boys Tennis Sweeps District,
Looks to the Region
By Luke Rabin (6/1/04)

Due to its sweeping 9-0 victory against the Clarke County Eagles, the boys’ tennis team is playing its regional semifinal tennis match today. The match is at GeorgeC. MarshallHigh School at 5:00 against Central Woodstock.

The season has been quite long, enduring longer than almost all Mason sports. It consisted of almost no district matches, except for the two against ClarkeCounty, which finished 8-1 and 9-0. The team faced much larger and intimidating schools like McLean and Chantilly, and did quite well against them. The Mustangs overcame the McLean team in a hard fought match, but barely lost to the tough Chantilly team.

The key to the Mustangs’ 5-1 season has been its hard hitting top two seeds, freshman Alex Goeting and senior Colin Ehmer. The two also played doubles together, and have reached the State tournament so far after winning both of their matches in the regional tournament. Freshman Alex Goeting lost to his singles opponent Logan Bricker in the semifinal, who emerged victorious last year as well against Mason’s previous number one.

In the upcoming match against Central Woodstock, the Mustangs are the highly favored team. The two teams have met many times before. Last year, they met in the regional final, after Mason got a bye into the finals. Though it was a tough match, the bottom half of the ladder won the match for the Mustangs, pushing them further into the State tournament. This year, they competed once at Central, emerging almost unanimously victorious. Mason shocked the Central team with its strong increase in talent, acquiring Alex Goeting and bringing Colin Ehmer back from his knee injury from the previous season.

Though number one Goeting lost his singles match, the rest of the matches were taken for the Mustangs overall victory. Senior Luke Rabin had a little trouble in his number 3 singles match, but eventually emerged victorious in his hard fought 10-8 victory. Other matches, such as the singles matches of sophomore James Ahn, junior Andrew Roller, and senior Ben Andrews, and the doubles matches of Luke Rabin and James Ahn, finished quickly by holding their opponents to no more than two games. The success found in their most recent meeting is expected out of today’s Regional match.
