With the varsity soccer team’s triumph over MadisonCounty, 2-0, and subsequent victory over ClarkeCounty, 2-0, the Mustangs won the Bull Run District tournament and head to the Regional Championship on Tuesday.

Last Friday, the Mustangs met the rival Eagles at Mason and began the match prepared for anything.Roughly 20 minutes into the match, sophomore sweeper Mike Chaves scored the first goal off a direct free kick near the Eagles’ goal.

Pressure intensified on and off the field as referees awarded four consecutive yellow cards to the aggressive Eagles, while the Mustangs received zero. Also, after several warnings from the exasperated referees, the entire ClarkeCounty fan base, stationed opposite the large George Mason bleachers, was ejected from the game and were ordered to stand outside the stadium gates due to excessively rowdy behavior. Seconds before the end of the first half, the Mustangs were denied a goal that was said to have gone off the football field goal post and was headed in by junior Josiah Larson.

After the commencement of the second half, the Mustangs emerged from the temporary no-goal slump with junior forward Adam Knudsen’s well-placed shot past the goaltender.Knudsen worked the ball past the defenders and, running within the penalty box, kicked it towards the inside post, past the Eagles’ goalie. The victory gave Mason first place and Clarke second in the Bull Run District.

The Bull Run District Champions each received an individual medal after the game, as well as two team trophies, one for the regular season win and another for the tournament win.Bull Run District first and second team players from both squads were honored after the game.All-Bull Run District first team players included sophomore Mike Chaves, junior Josiah Larson, and seniors Peter Dittmar and Peter Hamill.Representative from George Mason to the All-Bull Run District second team include junior Paul Arnaudo and senior Andrew Montgomery.Senior goalkeeper Alex Fatovic was named Bull Run District Player of the Year.
