Clean Sweep At Radford
All 3 Mason Teams Win States;
Boys’, Girls’ Soccer, Tennis Claim Titles

June 13, 2004

In an extraordinary weekend for Mason athletics, all three Mustang teams in contention for state championships came up victorious at Radford Saturday. Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams won championships, both against arch rival Clarke County and the boy’s tennis team beat J. I. Burton High School 5-0 for the state title.

Mason’s senior All-Star goalie Alex Fatovic made two impressive saves on a penalty kick by Clarke County’s star player Gavin Kashani to energize his tired team and minutes later sophomore midfielder Gregg Curtin scored as the Mustangs beat their arch rivals 1-0 last night to claim the title.

This was the fifth meeting this year between the two teams in this high-spirited and sometime contentious rivalry. The Eagles had beaten the Mustangs 1-0 in the Region B final on June 4.

The Mustangs had to fight off exhaustion as they had to finish a rain-delayed game against Radford High School in the morning. The Mustangs won that game 1-0 on senior Pete Hamill’s goal.

The girls’ soccer team also won its rematch 3-1 against Clarke County to win the state championship. The girls were also presented with the trophy for outstanding sportsmanship.
