Varsity Soccer
Mustangs Beat Windsor 3-0;
Head to States Tomorrow

By Omar Tanamly (June 11, 2004)

The varsity boys’ soccer team, with a season record of 16-4-3, qualified for the state semi-finals with their 3-0 victory over Windsor High School last Tuesday. The victory propels the Mustangs to the state tournament starting in Radford tomorrow. Goals were scored first by senior Peter Hamill in the first half and two by Nils-Petter Ek in the second half.

Prior to that game, in the regional quarterfinals, the Mustangs trounced Riverheads High School, 11-0, with goals scored by seniors Peter Hamill (four), Peter Dittmar (two) Brian O’Connor (two), Andrew Montgomery (two), and junior Ariel Toom (two). The opponents had few shots on goal as the strong Mason defense continued its impenetrable reign.

Two days later, Mustangs traveled to Goochland High School for the regional semifinals on Thursday, June 3, and put them away 5-0. The next day, the Mustangs traveled to Clarke County to face the Eagles in the regional final. The scoreboard stayed blank until Clarke County scored off of a deflection that managed to creep past senior goalie Alex Fatovic. Mustangs rallied to get the point back until the last second of the second half but were unsuccessful and faced their first loss since playing Dominion High School in the pre-district season. The Mustangs hope to get another crack at the Eagles, who will also be competing for the state title at Radford this weekend.
