Pre-Season Victory
Shows Great Possibilities
By: Becky Roa (March 16, 2004)
Within the first seven minutes of
the match, senior co-captain Becky Roa received a solid ball inside the
18 yard-line from senior co-captain Alison Penland that began the 5-0 victory
over AA Millbrook last Thursday.
A quick four minutes later, Roa scored
again off a cross inside the 18-yard line from senior mid-fielder Amanda
Harrington to put the Mustangs up by two. Shortly after, coach Clifford
Carroll switched the line-up and before the sound of the half senior forward
Maria Wood knocked in a ball with her thigh to end the half 3-0.

The Mustangs fast-paced
starting 11 opened up the second half with skillful passing, and plenty
of open looks, but it wasn’t until over 12 minutes of play that the Lady
Mustangs finally connected with the back of the net.
This time it was junior Jessica Oxley
from beyond the 18-yard line with a line drive over the Millbrook goalie.
To end the scoring, Roa connected for the third time of the night off of
a sharply grounded ball from Penland seconds before the final whistle.
Although the match was just a pre-season
scrimmage, assistant Coach Bob Penland said of the overall performance,
"It was a fast-paced match. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least."
Coach Carroll noted the performances of freshman defender Roxy Sweeney,
her sister junior halfback Rachel Sweeney, and freshman mid-fielder Katie
Turner. He added, " This scrimmage is only one evaluation of this team,
we still have work to do. But, in general, I think that there were some
good things that happened tonight." |
