After Two Weeks of Tryouts,
Five Added to 2004 Squad

By: Becky Roa (March 12, 2004)

After almost two weeks of tryouts, last year’s state runner-up squad has finally composed its 2004 team of 20 players, having added five Monday. "We took as much time as we needed to carefully pick players that we think will fit well with the kind of game that we play," said head coach Clifford Carroll. All five players are from the freshman class, and all of them "are tactical thinkers and players alike," said senior co-captain Alison Penland.

Unlike recent years, this years’ team has scheduled scrimmages against collective AA schools such as Broad Run and Millbrook instead of semi-deficient AAA schools like Falls Church and Jeb Stuart whom the Mustangs have yet to lose to since they began playing each other.

Having lost goalkeeper Megan Wilhelm, stopper Stacey Redick and midfielder Christina Sedney to graduation and sweeper Loreto Martinez due to a transfer, all four crucial starting positions will be tested out by incoming freshman as well as returnees in this Thursday’s away scrimmage against AA Millbrook at 7:30 p.m.
