Mustangs Upend Panthers 62-56,
Advance in District Tourney

By Deuce Greenfield (February 19, 2004)

In the first round of the Bull Run district playoffs, the Mustangs defeated visiting Rappahannock County, 62-56 Monday night at home. The Panthers played hard, but the Mustangs came out on top with first-team all district Evan Hamme’s 23 points. Pete Hamill chipped in 10 points, and reserve guard Colin Molano hit three clutch three-pointers late.

Late in the 4th quarter Mustang coach, Bill Broderick, drew up a great play that ended up with sophomore Travis Greene putting the lead out of reach with a layup. The Mustangs only committed 7 turnovers in the first half, a big improvement over what has been a problem all year.

The Mustangs face their rivals the Manassas Park Cougars tonight at Manassas, to determine a regional birth in playoffs. After two slim losses to the Cougars, Coach Broderick still feels optimistic. "We can beat this team," said Broderick emphatically. If the Mustangs fulfill their coach’s belief, they can go to the regional playoffs for the first time since 1999.

A regional birth in the playoffs for the Mustangs can be decided by Clarke County. If Clarke County defeats Strasburg, and the Mustangs defeat the Cougars, than they are automatically in. However if Strasburg defeats Clarke County, than the Mustangs must defeat the Cougars tonight, and Strasburg tomorrow night to attain a playoff birth.
