Season-Long Doubted Mustangs Lose In Regional Final Game Qualifier

By Becky Roa  (November 26, 2003)

A disappointing farewell it was for the Mustangs (7-4) that lost 34-0 to the Manassas Park Cougars (11-0) in Friday night’s game to decide who would play Central Lunenburg in the Regional final game.

"I don’t know what happened. We came out to play but throughout the game guys just weren’t blocking offensively or defensively," said senior Phill Blush. Early in the first quarter the Mustangs’ freshman Brain Larcamp intercepted the pass of junior Zach Terrell, player of the year.  . Unable to convert, the Cougars took over and scored off a 75-yard run and made the extra point to put them up by seven.

In the second quarter the Mustangs could not stop Terrell’s passes and the Cougar running backs.  The score was 28-0 at halftime. Third quarter the Mustangs were able to put a small handle on the Cougars offense and only allowed six more points.

In the final quarter the Mustangs, although tired and down 34 points, held the Cougars scoreless.  Regarding the five seniors, veterans Matt Williams, Chris Epling and Peter Dittmar and newcomers Casey Winzeler and Phill Blush, defensive head coach Adam Amerine said," these guys were fantastic leaders, they ran practice well, took care of the team and were all around good guys. We are really going to miss them."

Senior Matt Williams was named 1st team all district at two positions; senior Chris Epling earned 1st team all district as a defensive tackle; senior Peter Dittmar was named 1st team all district as a kicker, safety and 2nd team all district as a tight end; and senior Casey Winzeler was named to the 2nd team all district as a defensive back.
