Varsity Wrestling
Grapplers Open Practice
With Great Promise

By Mac Cohe (November 18, 2003)

The wrestling team started practice last Monday, November 10. The team had a strong turnout and is still welcoming all students who want to learn to wrestle. The varsity team has 12 returning starters and is led by team captains Mac Cohe, Colin Ehmer, and Devlan Melancon.

Last Season, Ehmer placed 3rd in the state championships at 135. Melancon was Region B runner-up and also wrestled well at states. Cohe was injured at the end of last season and was unable to compete in the post-season despite beating several state medalists in dual matches early in the season.

Andrew Hipolit and Tim Quintyn, who each qualified for regionals last year, also are returning for their senior seasons as well as two-time varsity letter winners Mike Cummings and Zach Schwind. Sophomores Nick Pitas, who won 28 matches last season breaking the freshman single season record, and Willie Hoover both qualified for regionals last year and are back this season.

Senior Andrew Hipolit, left, and sophomore John
Hillegass begin preparations for a long, promising
wrestling season.

Other returning letter winners from last season are Michael Coleman, Bob Bumgarner and Kristin Schwind. The team is rounded out by the addition of John Sullivan who just moved here from New Mexico where he qualified for states.

Head coach John Pitas said, "I’m pleased with the influx of new JV wrestlers and that the team now has 5 female wrestlers. If all the weights come out right and everyone stays healthy, Mason looks to have its best season ever."

Mason will hold its first scrimmage next Monday.
