Girls’ Volleyball
Varsity, JV Beat Cougars
After Splitting with Panthers

By Camille Christophel and Rabita Aziz (October 5, 2003)

Both the varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams won their matches against Manassas Park Thursday night on the Mustangs’ home court. The varsity finally prevailed 25-16, 25-27, 25-10, 11-25, and 15-12 after a long and tumultuous match. The lead switched sides many times during the exciting one and a half-hour match. Unlike the varsity, the junior varsity had an easier time winning, 25-9, 21-25, and 15-11.

Out of the three sets played in the junior varsity game, the Mustangs won the first and last sets. The score of the first set was 25-9. Manassas Park took the lead in the second set, with the score ending in 21-25. But the Mustangs came back with a victorious win with the final score of 15-11. "It was a tough match; Mustangs JV team showed a lot of heart and pulled off a win,"said head junior varsity coach Kristen Kurowski. It was a different story for the varsity team, however.

The Mustangs won the first set 25-16. The Cougars tied it up during the second set 25-27.

The Mustangs once again took the lead during the third set, 25-10. At this point, the Mustangs needed to win one more set to beat the Cougars.  Their prospects darkened, however, when Manassas Park won the fourth set with a score of 11-25. But the Mustangs came out victorious in the fifth and final set with a final score of 15-12. The varsity was cheered on by the junior varsity players from the sidelines, who were encouraging them with cheers like, "Go, Mustangs, you got it."

Two days earlier, the junior varsity defeated Rappahannock County High School on Tuesday night at home as well, 25-21, 26-24. Playing three sets wasn’t even necessary for the junior varsity, because they won the first two sets.

The varsity wasn’t as triumphant however, losing 10-25, 11-25, and 15-25. Mason ahd been expecting a difficult match as Rappahanock went to the volleyball state championships last year

The teams take on Madison County on October 7, away..
