2nd
in Districts, Mason Heads to
Regionals for First
Time Ever
(October 4, 2003)
Although the Mustangs came in
second to Strasburg in the Bull Run District Tournament last Tuesday, their
number two finish propelled Mason into the regional tournament for the
first time in the school’s history.

The six-man team’s
combined best four scores came to 375, considerably behind Strasburg’s
impressive 348. The Mustangs edged out Rappahannock, which scored 378.
There were five teams in the tournament.
The Mustangs will compete in the
regional tournament this coming Tuesday at the Stony Creek Course at Wintergreen.
Mason’s number-one ranked golfer,
senior Joe Mauro, led his teammates with a score of 88 strokes for the
18 holes at the Jackson’s Chase course in Front Royal. Mauro’s score was
the third best of the 30 golfers in the tournament and earned him a medal.
Mason’s second-ranked golfer, Dan McDonald , missed a medal by only two
strokes. Medals are awarded to the six lowest scoring competitors. |

Asked about his feelings about
making regionals for the first time in his school’s history, Mauro said,
"I’m just glad we finally did it before I graduated."
In addition to Mauro and McDonald,
Mason’s team, which coach Dan Wilkie called "the lowest scoring I’ve had,"
consisted of Cody Roden-Reynolds, Andy Walsh, Paul Mene, Ben Lasso, and
Sean Follin.
