Mustangs Run Record to 5-2 With 50-6 Massanutten Trouncing By Becky Roa (October 23, 2003) Mason’s varsity football team continued its season-long surprising performance against the Massanutten Military Academy with a dominating 50-6 victory last Friday, running its win streak to four in a row. Junior Steve Williams scored a career-high four touchdowns and a safety for a total of 26 points, sophomore Travis Greene added six and senior Casey Winzeler and junior John Inzer each had a touchdown for the first time this season. The victory over Massunutten raised the Mustangs’ overall record to 5-2."We knew that we would do well, our defense didn’t allow any errors which made our offensive game spectacular," said senior Chris Epling. The lopsided win was not anything like last week’s game against Bull Rn District rival Madison County, won in the last few seconds. Upsetting the Mountaineers in their homecoming game, senior kicker Peter Dittmar helped the Mustangs prevail from a near 15-13 loss; Dittmar kicked the game winning field goal with 3.2 seconds left in regulation and the Mustangs won 16-15. Two weeks previous, the Mustangs built their overall record to 3-2 with a 17-7 victory over Goochland. George Mason struggled in the first half, fumbling on three straight possessions, only having the ball for a total of 4:52. Nonetheless, the second half allowed junior Steve Williams, sophomore Travis Greene, sophomore Ried Nash and senior Peter Dittmar to contribute to the Mustangs win. The Mustangs play next at home on October 25 at 2:00 p.m; in their Homecoming Game. There will be a presentation of the homecoming court and a half time show provided by the dance team.
