Mustangs Tough it Out
At Lafayette Duals

By Mac Cohe (January 6, 2004)

Seniors Mike Cummings (152 lbs), Mac Cohe (171lbs) and Andrew Hipolit (189 lbs) each went 4-1 and led the Mustangs to a fourth place finish at the Lafayette Duals this past weekend in Williamsburg, VA.

This tournament had six teams that each wrestled each other round-robin style so that every wrestler would get five matches on the day. As a team the Mustangs finished 4th defeating Group AA teams Bruton 47-18 and Northampton 40-36. The Mustangs also lost narrowly to Brooke Point 37-42 due to an unexpected forfeit at the 145 lb. weight class. GM competed well with Group AAA Hampton and the host team Lafayette which is currently ranked 6th in the state in Group AA.

Cummings recorded two pins and Cohe and Hipolit each recorded one. All three lost their matches to a state Group AA ranked opponent. Cohe lost an 8-6 squeaker to the 4th ranked Group AA wrestler who also recorded his 100th career win that day. Hipolit’s match with the sixth ranked Group AA opponent was tied going into the third period where a single mistake led to a loss by decision.

Sophomores Nick Pitas (112 lbs.) and Mike Coleman (125 lbs.) also went 4-1 on the day both recording three pins. Sophomore Bob Bumgarner (160 lbs.) went 3-2 on the day recording two pins. Senior Tim Quintyn (275 lbs.) and sophomore Willie Hoover (140 lbs.) both went 3-2 for the day each recording one pin. The Mustangs lineup was rounded out by sophomore Kristin Schwind (119 lbs.) who went 2-3 for the day and by Jesse Lennon (130 lbs.) and Trevor Quillin (135 lbs.).

At the end of the day, the season wins record of 36 and season pins record of 16 are both still very much in jeopardy. Cohe and Hipolit lead the team in wins at 13, Pitas at 11, and Melancon and Hoover at 10. Cohe also leads the team in pins with 10, Hipolit and Pitas are close behind with 8 each, and Coleman, Melancon and Cummings all have 6 pins.

The Mustang Wrestlers’ next event is a quad match at home on Wednesday, January 7th at 5:00 in the main gym.
