After months of planning
and organization, seniors Katie Mitchell, left, and Catherine
Duarte held the first meeting of the George Mason High
School chapter of Habitat for Humanity
of Northern Virginia. During the meeting, they discussed the club’s
plans for the remainder of the school year, which will hopefully
include fundraising for the organization, advocacy about the
prevalence of homelessness, and the construction of inexpensive
condominiums for low-income
families. Members of the GMHS Habitat
for Humanity chapter, along with students from George C. Marshall and Yorktown High
School, will have the opportunity to work at the
building site known as the Westbrook Forest Project,
located near Lee Highway in Fairfax. Eventually, the Westbrook Forest condominiums
will be home to 12 local families. As the weather and, subsequently, building
site conditions improve in the upcoming weeks, the Habitat for Humanity club
will be holding follow-up meetings to finalize its fundraising projects and organize
volunteers
to work at the Westbrook Forest Project. All Masonites are
welcome to attend, but students must be at least 16 years old to participate
in hands-on construction.
