Scholastic Bowl
Mason Wraps Up Undefeated
Bull Run Season, Wins District Title

By Margaret Lipman (February 6, 2007)

The Scholastic Bowl team added another win to its undefeated season by taking home the Bull Run District championship on Saturday at Clarke County High School.   Their latest win marks the eighth consecutive time that a GM team has won the district title.

The team handily defeated all of their opponents, though with slightly smaller margins than usual.  First, they took on Strasburg, winning 310-100.  Next, they defeated Rappahannock County 250-120.  However, due to the double-elimination format of the tournament, Mason again faced Rappahannock in the finals, winning 270-160.

Besides the district title, coach Jamie Scharff was awarded district coach of the year, and senior David Maher was named district player of the year.  Next Saturday, the team, along with runner-up Rappahannock, will travel to Gretna for the Region B Tournament, where they will try to take home their third straight regional title and a chance to return to the state tournament.  Several other members of the team will also be competing in the second round of the NBC quiz show “It’s Academic” next Saturday.
