Scholastic Bowl
GM Takes Home State
Title After 23-0 Season

By Margaret Lipman (February 28, 2007)

The Scholastic Bowl team finished a perfect season with a win in the State Championship Saturday at the College of William and Mary.  This is the third time that Mason has taken home the Division A title, following wins in 2002 and 2003, but the first undefeated season in the team’s history.

Led by seniors Matt Peppe and David Maher, senior captain Margaret Lipman, and junior Peter Davis, the team sailed through the first round, defeating Twin Springs 295-40.  Juniors Peter Breen, K-K Bracken, and Brennan Downey also contributed to the win.  Next, the team bested West Point High School 250-145, guaranteeing them a spot in the semifinals.  They met Radford High School, last year’s state champions, in that round.  Despite several tense moments, Mason pulled off a comfortable win of 240-160.  Mason would again face Radford in the finals, winning 270-115 to clinch the title.  Memorable answers to question in the tournament ranged from The Stepford Wives to Mendel’s Law of Segregation, from Uncle Tom Cabin’s villain Simon Legree to General Winfield Scott, and from the planet Neptune to biblical Bathsheba.

This year was the sixth consecutive State Championship attended by George Mason.  After winning the title in 2002 and 2003, Mason was runner-up in 2004, fifth in 2005, and runner-up once again in 2006 against the strong Radford team.  Although the Mustangs will lose three of their starting seniors next year, juniors Davis, Bracken, Breen, and Downey will all be returning, along with coach Jamie Scharff, of course.  However, the team also hopes to recruit underclassmen to take part in the winning tradition and hopefully return to States once again.
