Returning from Ski Trip
Seniors Hurt in Bus Accident;
4 Treated at Canadian Hospital
(January 16, 2007)
Four George Mason seniors were hospitalized
yesterday afternoon after the charter bus in which they were
passengers flipped onto its side while coming back from a ski
trip in Quebec City.
All those involved in the accident were examined at the St.
Croix hospital near Drummondville to
check for injuries, which range from minor lacerations and concussions
to broken bones.

At this time, two Mason students have not yet
been released from the hospital. The other seven Masonites who
participated in the trip are currently on their way back to Falls
Church, some by bus and others by plane,
after spending the night in a hotel near the hospital.
The nine George Mason students on
the bus were among a group of nearly 40 students, who had spent
the weekend skiing in Quebec City on
a trip sponsored by Atlantic Sun Tours. Overall, nearly 30 students,
also from Gonzaga College High
School and Washington and Lee High
School, suffered injuries. The accident
occurred around 2:30 pm between Quebec
City and Montreal when,
in heavy snow and on icy roads, the driver lost control of the
bus and sent it skidding on its side and onto the median. |

“I was disturbed to hear about the injuries,” said
Sharon Schoeller, mother of Emily Saltzberg who
had been on the trip. She and other parents report the students
seemed especially shaken up by the incident, compelling some to
travel the rest of the way home by air, rather than bus. One of
the most frustrating aspects, for many parents, was the lack of
communication at the time. “There was real difficulty getting in
touch with the kids,” said Suzanne Sabbatini,
mother of senior, Emily Sabbatini. “Thank
goodness most kids have cell phones, so we were able to piece together
all the information,” said Sabbatini.
