Tallying 950 out of a possible 1,000 evaluative points, the Lasso took top honors at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) publications workshop in Charlottesville.

For the third time in five years the Lasso was recognized as a Trophy Class newspaper, the highest honor awarded newspapers in the state.  A paper must earn 930 points to qualify for the trophy class.

Lasso has been entered in the VHSL evaluative service for the past seven years.  During that time Lasso has taken trophy class three times and first place four times.

The paper was especially recognized for the diversity and relevance of its coverage of important stories and for its quality of writing.

Said newspaper sponsor Michael Hoover, "As proud as I am of the journalists for earning this award, I'm prouder of the fact that so many of our graduates go on to work on university papers and to study journalism in college.  Awards are nice, but they're simply representative of lots of hard work and creativity.
