The McDonald's which opened September 27th at West End is relying heavily on teen-agers to fill about 80 positions because of its proximity to George Mason and George Marshall High Schools. As of this writing there were about 40 people hired, but fluctuation is expected at least in the first few months, according to Harry Lackey, manager of the McDonald's on Rt. 50 where hiring started. Employees start at $2.20 an hour and can become eligible for a raise after one month. Positions such as openers and closers, who have had more experience, are paid more than those starting out as grill workers and cashiers. Most employees work at least 20 hours per week and there is wide flexibility of hours and days to work. New employees are trained with pay at their own speed. Applicants should apply in person at the West End McDonald's and must be at least 16 years old unless they appear in court to testify for family need of employment.Experienced McDonald's employees can progress to higher level jobs, and can eventually enter the Swing Manager Program. Mr. Lackey cited the example of an employee who started out as a grill worker four years ago and now makes $10,000 a year, the starting salary for manager trainees. Mark Conway, manager of the West End McDonald's, says that in this area a full manager's minimum salary is $14,000 a year with benefits.
