Videogames: Are They Really
A Nightmare for Parents?

By Sebastián Forster (February 12, 2007)
Translated by Margaret Lipman (February 21, 2007)

These days, many people argue that videogames are bad.  But why?  Even though people frequently say that videogames are destroying our children’s future, these games are really not so bad.

The human race has advanced so much that we have arrived at a point where we have millions of forms of communication.  One of these means of communication is the Internet.  Today’s technology has reached such a speed that we are now able to play these videogames with people from all over the world.  I suppose that if parents were to read this, they would think that the Internet is a bad invention and try to restrict it, believing that kids would never take their eyes off of the screen.  However, this is not true.

In reality, these games help to create a global community.  Obviously, they are just games, but a videogame user can truly interact with people from all over the world.  It’s fascinating.  You have to communicate and help one another in order to pass through labyrinths and get to higher levels.  These interactions can form friendships and can help us to understand each other on a basic level.  This teaches us that regardless of which culture or nation we belong to, we can all have fun playing videogames because we are very similar.

The games that some believe to be childish truly have a practical importance in the world.  It’s true that a game is just a game, but if it is used well, it can serve a useful cause and help to create a more united world.
