By Liz Gannon The Mason Track and Field team made their presence known at the Bull Run District competition at Brentsville High School on Wednesday, May 16th and brought home three first place titles from senior Beau Fay, junior Leen Quintyn, and sophomore Annie Maynard. Neither the boys or girls team qualified for regionals, the girls coming up short at third place, however, Mason will be represented by eight individuals at the Regional Tournament at the University of Virginia next Thursday, May 24th. Fay was the spotlight of the district meet after claiming first place in the district for shot put and discus, setting school records in both events. Tim Lyberger’s 1979 shot put record of 48’8" was finally replaced with Fay’s 49’1¾" throw as well as his discus throw of 140’3" which broke a 1966 record of 140’3" from Leon Michalowski. Both throws exceed state qualifications, marking Fay’s third trip to the state tournament. "Nobody expects anything but first place from Beau anymore, but it made me proud to see him achieve a goal he’s been trying to get for so long," said senior teammate Dean Corbino. Not to be outdone, Quintyn easily took first place in discus, breaking her own school record by two feet with a 94’8" throw and Corbino took 6th place in the shot put with a personal best throw of 40’11". Maynard surprised no one as she earned district titles in both the 800 and 400 meter dashes, putting her into states for her second year in a row. Other impressive performances came from junior Liz Twentyman who finished 3rd in the 800, followed by freshman Louisa Fairfax in 5th place as well as junior Folake Ojumu who finished 4th in the 100 meter dash and senior Jessica Karnis who earned 6th place honors in the 3200 run. Sophomore Mark Murchie will be running in regionals after taking 3rd place in the 400 meter dash and 5th place in the 800 meter dash along with freshman Niles Lashway, who placed 6th in the 300 meter hurdles beating his personal record. "We’re expecting big things at regionals after
such a great job at the districts. We far surpassed our own expectations,"
said Murchie.
