Softball Spring '01

As the softball season draws to a close, the Lady Mustangs are proving that they’ve saved the best for last. The girls had a frustrating start, winning only the first scrimmage. In a few games the team fell only one or two points short of winning. But then on Tuesday, May 8th, all that changed when their hard work finally paid off. The Mustangs beat Edmund Burke 12-4. "We pulled every aspect of the team together—the defense and the offense," said sophomore center fielder Laura Straub.

The team went on to cream the Strausburg Rams on Friday, May 11. The 6-1 victory was the first district win for the Mustangs. "We were due for a district win and we finally got it. The team was fantastically excited," said sophomore designated hitter Katie Roberts. On Monday, May 14, the Mustangs won again, this time against Grace-Brethren, 4-2. "We’ve quadrupled our wins from last year, I think everyone is really excited," Straub said.

Girl’s softball is a relatively young team this year, after graduating many of their key players last season. The Mustangs are led by softball veterans seniors Mary Prendergast, Whitney Pollock and Cassi Varouxis

The team suffered a disappointing defeat on Tuesday, May 15, against Brentsville. The 16-1 loss has not dampened the Mustang spirit though. "Although we had a lot of tough times, we proven to ourselves and to the school that we can be a winning team," said sophomore pitcher Kristen Janski.
