Mason-Too Big for Its Britches

By Richard Arndt

The size of Mason’s student body is growing extremely fast. Since the Washington Post dubbed George Mason the "second best school in the country," people have been flocking in so fast that our school has not been able to keep up. Space is limited and there are not enough classrooms to hold the growing number of students. Teachers continuously have to share classrooms with each other because there aren’t enough for each teacher to have his or her own. To cope with this lack of space, our school is going to need trailers next year.

In total there are going to be six trailers, four are going to be for the high school and two for the middle school. All six of the trailers will be situated in the "A" parking lot, right outside the front of the school.

"The new trailers may cause parking problems but they are needed to support the growing number of students," said Assistant Principal Monika Bilby.

It has not been decided yet which teachers will be moved out of the building into these new trailers but nevertheless some teachers will have to make the sacrifice. For some of the teachers who did not have their own classroom this year it may actually be a pleasant upgrade to be in a trailer.

"Being in a trailer would not be too inconvenient as long as I have all of my supplies and equipment," said science teacher Eureka Chang.

Even though these trailers will pose some inconveniences to both students and teachers, they will most definitely have many advantages too. They will considerably decrease classroom size and limit the number of teachers having to share classrooms. This school has had trailers in the past with relative ease.

While the trailers are being used, classroom construction will be continuing. Trailers may not be beautiful, but they are essential.
