International Dinner

By Jonathan Costa

The George Mason populace consists of students from many different countries and cultures. This creates a great amount of cultural diffusion. But to really appreciate all of the cultures around the world, one must be exposed to all of them simultaneously, and with some form of entertainment. The International Club created such an encounter with the International Dinner. For those who went, it was a fun experience that gave students, parents and teachers alike a chance to relax and have some fun.

"This year was one of the best yet. We were afraid we would not be able to get the Korean dancers, but we were able to after all. Mr. Marino’s choir was also an essential part. I was surprised he was able to help with the entertainment, on account of his directing the musical," said Miradey Pin, President of the International Club. Students with their parents brought in both food from their country of origin and artifacts from their cultures. They were also encouraged to wear attire from that country. The food included warm dishes, salads and desserts. The Korean dancers, Mr. Marino’s student choir and other musical attractions added more of an international feeling to the dinner. Senior Santiago Cardero also sang and played La Bamba on his guitar.

The International Dinner was a success, with a record amount of participants. The event later aired on Telemundo, a national Spanish speaking channel, around the DC metropolitan area, and on Falls Church’s own channel 38.

"The decorations were stupendous. Many of my friends came in early to help with setting up. The effort put in by all the International Club members was great. But best of all was the leadership of Señorita Biggers. She put it all together, and was very happy with the outcome of the dinner," said sophomore Stephanie Johnston.

"It was a great improvement from last year’s. For one, we had better entertainment. We got groups we were unable to get last year. We also had more food and more people in general. We used the cafeteria lines so that we had more space in the cafeteria. All in all, it was a great dinner," said club sponsor Maria Biggers.
