Faculty Focus: Zen and The Art of Motivation Maintenance

By R. Andrew Miller

Chris Madison, also known as "Mad-Dog" to loved ones, is the quintessential Mason alum. After four years of starring on the cross-country, basketball and tennis teams (and helping bring home three state tennis titles), Madison developed a strong love for the school, as well as athletics.

"I am driven in life by my two deepest loves – sports and kids," said Madison.

Since graduating in 1992, he has morphed into a versatile, multi-sport coach and faculty member. By day, he serves mainly as a study hall guru, but after school Madison slides into many a coaching role. Last fall, he took over the girls’ basketball program from legendary skipper Jim Spiridopoulos and led them to a surprisingly successful season with a young, unproven squad. This winter he served as an assistant to Chris Capannola on the boys’ basketball team, helping it achieve its most successful season ever. Madison is currently in his fourth season as the head coach of the girls’ tennis program, which is busy striving for its first state championship since a two-peat in 1987-88. He also keeps his late-nights and weekends busy with coaching star Mason guard Beth "B.P Are Ya With Me" Pyne on the AAU Potomac Valley Vogues.

"Sure it’s a busy life, but I consider myself the luckiest man alive, being given the opportunity to coach and work with so many fine student-athletes. I can only hope that they have learned as much from me as I have from them," said Madison.
