by Beau Fay Seldom in modern times can one venture into a small restaurant, take a seat and order a gyro, fries and a beer for six dollars. Unless you frequent Athens Deli, of course. Located in the Willston Shopping Center in North Arlington, Athens combines traditional Greek vittles with a latin-American atmosphere. Highlighted by Telemundo broadcasts, Athens is the perfect economical establishment in which to get full. Athens is hidden between thrift stores and pawn shops, and locating a parking spot is an important but difficult task. Due to the popularity of the establishment, parking can be scarce at peak hours. The initial entrance to Athens will bring forth the aroma of gyros, souvlakis and feta cheese. A hostess is always on call to lead patrons to the large array of tables, lined along the wall and into the back. When seated and armed with menus, one will be immediately struck at both the incredibly low prices and the brobdingnagian beverage selection. Ordering is a speedy and efficient process, and one can find entertainment from two overhead televisions while waiting. To increase the ambiance, posters and photos of the Acropolis and other Greek landmarks grace the walls. Large portions are served at Athens, and a meal consisting of a sandwich, a side order and a drink should run just over five dollars. Although often crowded at peak meal hours, Athens provides more than enough chairs to accommodate patrons. Athens is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the menu consists mainly of conventional Greek dishes with a smattering of Tex-Mex options. The latter is more available during breakfast hours, although the lunch and dinner menus are laden with said dishes. In addition to the entrees which have helped make Athens popular, a wide array of beverages are served for all. Athens Deli is not to be overlooked
if one is out to enjoy high quality eats at low fare. Stop by Athens for
any meal—breakfast, lunch or dinner, and you can bet that you’ll walk out
satisfied and still have funds to spare.
